16 June 2007 - A Nottinghamshire postman who refused to deliver junk mail has been sacked.
The postman from Burton Joyce was suspended last week and a disciplinary hearing took place this week. Although Royal Mail did not want to comment on the individual cases, a statement from the company confirmed that the postman has been dismissed.
Residents of Burton Joyce had called for their postman to be reinstated. Councillor Pat Blandamer said: "People don't have a bad word to say of him. He has been our postman since I have lived here and you couldn't wish for better.
"He's a very reliable, hardworking postman and someone Royal Mail should be proud of, not someone who should be subjected to all this heartache. We believe Royal Mail has over-reacted when a simple verbal warning would have sufficed quite adequately."
The postman, who had been on the round for 17 years, will have the right to appeal.
