East Sussex says no to junk mail

East Sussex County Council is hoping to cut back on waste by offering residents of the county a free 'No Junk Mail' sticker for their letterbox.

Around a million tonnes of junk mail is thrown away in the UK every year, according to East Sussex. To reduce the waste mountain the County Council is encouraging people to cut back on stop junk mail.

The sticker the county has produced reads 'No circulars or leaflets. Thank you.' A press release issued by the council says that "although the sticker does not guarantee that the most unscrupulous leafleters will stop delivering mail, it does make the message clear that it is not wanted."

Councillor Matthew Lock, Lead Cabinet Member for Transport and Environment, said: "Attaching this sticker to your letter box is a simple and effective way to stop junk mail being pushed through your door. By stopping all the unwanted free newspapers and take away menus people in East Sussex can save paper and reduce waste."
