22 January 2007 - East Sussex County Council has decided to help people in the county to do something about the ever increasing amount of junk mail they receive… by offering them 'no junk mail' stickers!
Around a million tonnes of junk mail is thrown away in the UK every year. East Sussex is now encouraging people to reduce the amount of rubbish that goes to landfill by trying to stop junk mail in the first place.
The sticker the county has produced reads 'No circulars or leaflets. Thank you.' A press release issued by the council says that "although the sticker does not guarantee that the most unscrupulous leafleters will stop delivering mail, it does make the message clear that it is not wanted."
Councillor Matthew Lock, Lead Cabinet Member for Transport and Environment, said: "Attaching this sticker to your letter box is a simple and effective way to stop junk mail being pushed through your door. By stopping all the unwanted free newspapers and take away menus people in East Sussex can save paper and reduce waste."
