8 January 2007 - The Liberal Democrat controlled council in York has run into trouble after a resident complained about junk mail being shoved through his letterbox - by the party's deputy leader.
The York Press today reports about how a local resident has fired off a complaint to City of York Council's leader after confronting his deputy Andrew Waller on the doorstep about the deluge of mail.
The resident said he was fed up with receiving political mail drops from the Lib Dems: "This afternoon we received yet another Lib Dem flyer through our letterbox, despite having had a 'no free newspapers or junk mail' sticker issued by the council on our letterbox.
Part of the waste policy of the city of York is to offer 'no junk mail' stickers to its residents. The resident therefore handed the flyer back to Mr Waller and drew his attention to the sticker on the letterbox, upon which the deputy leader replied that they are printed on recycled paper.
"Rather beside the point, I thought. Recycling all starts with setting the right example. A Lib Dem flyer is not a council publication and needs to be looked upon as unsolicited mail.
"I hope that in future the Lib Dem party activists can be seen to support their own initiatives and skip our letterbox like most other delivers of junk mail fortunately do."
