Scams
More information about scams
On just about every page in this section I've mentioned that you should always contact both Consumer Direct and the Think Jessica Campaign if you suspect a scam. It's something I can't repeat often enough…
Consumer Direct
Consumer Direct is a government funded advice service for everyone to use and will be able to give you clear and practical information. Call them on 08454 040506.
Unfortunately, Consumer Direct doesn't have its own website anymore. However, there is still a page where you can report scams:
Action Fraud
You can also report scams to Action Fraud:
The Action Fraud website also contains information about help available for scam victims. Usually, Action Fraud refers people to the charity Victim Support.
Think Jessica
Think Jessica provides an useful service to people who are being scammed or know someone who is being targeted by scammers:
Office of Fair Trading
Scams are a priority for the Office of Fair Trading and its OFT website also contains some information on scams:
The OFT has also published a number of leaflets about scams:
-
How to recognise a scam? (PDF)
As you'd expect, this leaflet tells you what to watch out for.
-
Scambuster: your guide to beating the scammers (PDF)
A leaflet describing some of the most common scams.
-
Can you stop the person you care for from being scammed? (PDF)
A guide for carers and care professionals who suspect someone they care for is being scammed.
Free paper copies of these leaflets can be ordered by phoning 0800 389 3158. The leaflets are available in different formats and languages.
